Cover Comparisons [4]

For this week's cover comparison I'm comparing the covers of Delirium by Lauren Oliver! Delirium recently got a cover makeover for the special edition of the book that's coming out this fall. This new cover? Yeah, its pretty dang sweet. But then again, so is the original cover. Lets compare the two shall we?

Original Cover: I LOVE this cover. Its visually stunning, super eye-catching, and just plain awesome. I'm a big fan. The only thing I don't really like about it is the girls expression in the picture. Is she sleeping? What's up? Its just weird. But other than that I just adore this cover.

Special Edition US Cover: Wow. That was the first thing I thought when I saw this new cover. Its absolutely gorgeous. The color scheme, the intensity of the photo, everything. I also love that it really captures the essence of what Delirium is about. The only thing that I don't really like about this cover is that it isn't as unique as the original. It reminds me a lot of other covers, especially the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. In a sea of similar books it just doesn't stand out as much as the original.

So who wins? Gosh, I don't know. This one is a total toss up for me. I love the original because, well, its original! Oh and don't forget the fact that its shiny. >.< But then again I just love the new cover because of its intensity. I have to call a tie on this one! I just can't choose.

GAHHHHH!!!! I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed that they decided not to continue the original cover scheme, but then again these new covers are so awesome that I can't really complain. I mean look at how badass Lena looks? She's a regular Katniss Everdeen on this cover! And if you know me then you know how much I LOVE Katniss Everdeen!!!

What do you guys think of the new Delirium covers? Love them? Hate them? Wish they had continued the old design? I'm curious to know your thoughts!

Bookish Questions: Is there such thing as being too edgy in YA?

YA has kind of been given a bad rap lately. Why? Well, a lot of people seem to think its "too edgy." That there's just too much "tough stuff" in YA lit, and teenagers can't handle it. So I've decided to pose the question: Is there such a thing as being too edgy in YA? 

Personally, I like a lot of edgy YA books. Growing up homeschooled for my entire life has caused me to be fairly sheltered from a lot of things in the world. Drugs, eating disorders, suicide, they all seemed like a mystery to me. Sure I knew they existed but reading books about them actually made the issues become real. Drugs? Ellen Hopkins. Eating Disorders? Laurie Halse Anderson. Suicide? Jay Asher. The list goes on and on. Yes, a lot of these books are dark and fairly mature, but never for a moment have I regretted reading any of them.

Of course there are always some edgy YA books that I'm not going to read. For example I never read The DUFF by Kody Keplinger. I've heard its an amazing book, and I'm sure that it is, but I'm not really into books with a lot of sexual themes, so I just decided not to read this one.


Basically what I'm trying to say here is that I think it doesn't matter how "edgy" a YA book is. What does matter is that people use discernment when choosing the books they read.  Not all books are going to suitable for all people. But that doesn't mean that you stamp a label on a book stating that its "too edgy" for all readers.

So those are my thoughts on edgy YA. I'm super curious to know your guyses opinions on the subject. Do you agree with me? Or do you think that some YA books are just too edgy for teen readers? What are some of your favorite "edgy" YA reads?

Book Review: We'll Always Have Summer

Two brothers.

One true love.


Summer will never be the same.

Belly has only ever been in love with two boys, both with the last name Fisher. And after being with Jeremiah for the last two years, she's almost positive he is her soul mate.

Almost.

Conrad has not gotten over the mistake he made when he let Belly go, even as Jeremiah has always known that Belly is the girl for him. So when Belly and Jeremiah decide to make things forever, Conrad realizes that it's now or never - tell Belly he loves her, or lose her for good. Belly will have to confront her feelings for Jeremiah and Conrad and face a truth she has possibly always known: She will have to break one of their hearts.

In a Nutshell: We'll Always Have Summer is the conclusion to one of the best fluffy summer book series I've ever read.

Putdownability Factor: Non-existant. I only put this book down for reasons that couldn't be avoided like driving my cousins to taekwondo class or showering.

Cover Love: I absolutely love the covers in this series! The font, the colors, the continuity, the beachy feel, everything is just perfect.

My Thoughts (Warning! This review may contain spoilers for those who haven't read the book)

I've been reading this series since the beginning. These books are the absolute perfect summer beach reads and I'm sad that this is the last installment in the series. I won't have anymore to look forward to at the beginning of summer! But regardless, this series remains a summer favorite. And while not everything was perfect about We'll Always Have Summer, I still think it was a great conclusion, to a great series.

I love the way Jenny Han's easy going and poetic writing style mirrors the summeriness (is that a word? No? Well it is now. :P) of her novels. If you've read The Summer I Turned Pretty and Its Not Summer Without You then you should know what I'm talking about. Everything about her writing just exudes "Summer" and "Beachy" and "Laid back." We'll Always Have Summer is no exception. It definitely carries on the summer read legacy that was started in The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The beach house is back, and so are Belly's memories that go with it. My favorite element of this series is most definitely the flashbacks Belly has of summers past. Childhood memories of sand and boardwalks, ice cream cones, and sea spray. Everytime I cracked the cover of We'll Always Have Summer it was like being transported to the beach and being allowed to peek into the corners of Belly's mind. I would have loved more flashbacks in this book, but maybe that's just me.

So now that I'm done praising this book its time for me to lay it bare and tell you the few gripes I had. The biggest one being the characters. I just didn't feel like they were concrete with the rest of the series. I mean sure, Jeremiah was always the happy-go-lucky, fun-loving of the two brothers but honestly did you have to turn him into a frat boy?! Egh. And Conrad? Ohhhh Conrad. I'll admit he sort of won me over by the end of this novel, but since when did he suddenly care so much? And since when did he become so responsible? And why is he suddenly making Jeremiah look like a jerk when HE was always the jerk? Yeah, like I said the characters just didn't feel consistent with the rest of the books. Though I will say that I throughly enjoyed the Conrad Birdie reference used in this book considering that's what always went through my head while reading about Conrad. Glad you finally utilized that Jenny Han! Woot woot!

And my final issue with this book was the angst. Oh the angst of this novel! I have to say this is probably the most angsty, romancy book I've ever read. First there was the "he cheated on me" angst and then the "my mother won't support my wedding" angst, and then the "I might still like Conrad" angst, and finally the all important "which brother do I choose?!?!" angst. Too. Much. Angst.

Overall We'll Always Have Summer was a solid conclusion to the Summer series, but I certainly wouldn't say it was my favorite (that would be The Summer I Turned Pretty!). I give We'll Always Have Summer 3 and a half ice cream cones out of 5.

Who would I recommend this book to? Teen girls in search of some summer reads should definitely give this series a chance.

Kawaii Monday: Dinosaur Shirt

This week's Kawaii Monday features a dinosaur t-shirt! You guys might already know that I absolutely ADORE dinosaurs. In fact my first Kawaii Monday post was about dinosaur erasers! So when I saw this dinosaur t-shirt I just about died of happiness.

HOW CAN YOU RESIST THE ADORABLENESS?! And not only that but no truer words were ever written. I love dinosaurs? HECK YES! :)

Anyway, unless you don't like dinosaurs, its basically impossible not to like this shirt. Its just beyond awesome.

So apparently I'm like Juno?

In case you read the title of this blog post and your first thought was "Oh my gosh Julia is pregnant?!" then I'm sorry to disappoint you but your assumption would be wrong. Haha. :P

So what is the title of this post referring to? Well, I don't know if you guys knew this or not, but for the last two weeks I was away at a camp called Echo. A ton of people there thought I was like Juno. I got told like a bajillion times "Hey you remind me someone. Ever seen that movie Juno?" It was all kinds of hilarious. So yeah, I'm Juno. Heck yes.

I rewatched the movie because of this and gosh darn it we really are similar. There were certain moments when her dialogue was like exactly something I would say. Anyway this has made me decide that when I'm a camp counselor my camp name is gonna be Juno. Fo shiz. :)

So anyway camp was freaking amazing.

Here's just some of the awesome stuff we did:

Wash dishes. I probably rinsed over a thousand by the end of camp. Good thing we only had to rinse them and not actually wash them. They had this crazy power washer that basically cleaned and sterilized 12-14 dishes in 1 minute flat. It was awesome. If everyone had one of those in their house dishes would be so much easier. :P

I am now an egg cracking queen. Me and another gal cracked 540 eggs in a  half an hour. Two at a time, one in each hand. We were beasts!

Ocean Kayaking. Besides the fact that I got super motion sick while doing this activity (lets just say that I got out of the raft and everyone immediately assumed I ran off to throw up afterwards. Which wasn't true by the way... :P) I still LOVED it. I even saw a baby sea otter!

SURFING BABY!!! I had never been before but I had always wanted to go. It was AWESOME but so hard. I successfully rode one wave in balancing completely on my knees and I also kind of stood up at the end of one wave. Surfing is definitely harder than it looks but its also lots of fun.

And last but definitely not least, we learned about Jesus!!! Heck yes!

So that was my camp experience in a nutshell. Two weeks in the glorious redwoods of California. We served for 4 hours each day (dishes, trash pick up, bathroom cleaning, food prep, etc.) and then just hung out and did fun awesome things like go to the beach and study the Bible. I know what you're thinking. Why on earth would you go to a camp where you had to work for 4 hours each day? Well, let me be the first to say that its a lot funner than it sounds. I LOVED it and I definitely want to apply to be a counselor to the younger grade school kids next year. Best job ever? I think so!

Book Review: Wintergirls

Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her stepmother is clueless. An dthe voice in side Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way - thin, thinner, thinnest - maybe she'll disappear altogether.

In a Nutshell: Wintergirls is a hard look into the world of eating disorders

Putdownability Factor: The difficult nature of this novel makes it one of those ones you really have to process therefore, taking reading breaks was necessary. For me at least.

Cover Love: Gorgeous. Perfect. The reason why I got the book in the first place! I mean come on, ITS SHINY!!!! :D

My Thoughts

I've never had an eating disorder, nor have I ever known anyone who has had one, but that didn't stop this book from really hitting home for me. This book scared me in the best way possible and it also saddened me deeply. Before reading Wintergirls I knew that eating disorders were a problem. I knew they existed. But I didn't know the full extent of what they were and how they could take root in a persons life and just consume then from the inside out. Now I know. And I have this book to thank for opening my eyes to the truth.

Laurie Halse Anderson's writing is dense, and sporadic, and perfectly detached. Its poetic, but at the same time its halting. I loved it. Every bit of it.

Wintergirls definitely isn't light reading. Its emotionally draining, but in the end it proves to be totally worth it. There are some people who say that Wintergirls is too dark for teens. And I agree to an extent. Its definitely a bit dark for young teen readers. But if you're older and think you have the maturity to handle this book, then I definitely encourage you to give it a chance.

Wintergirls isn't for everyone. Laurie Halse Anderson holds nothing back when it comes to the effects of eating disorders and the result is dark, and gritty, but in the end its triumphant. I give Wintergirls 4 out of 5 ice cream cones.

Who would I recommend this book to: More mature readers who can handle the intensity of the subject matter. I also would encourage someone to read this book if they have a friend who is struggling with an eating disorder.

Kawaii Monday: Snow White Squinkies

Hows it going guys? I've been away at camp for the past 2 weeks so this is my first post since I've been back! YAY!!! Its gonna be weird getting back into the swing of blogging. I'll probably be kind of lazy and not post as regularly as I used to for awhile. Hehe. :P Anyway on to what this post is really about: Snow White Squinkies!

At this point in time you're probably asking: What the heck is a Squinkie? Honestly I don't really know. Basically its just a tiny little rubber toy figurine. Doesn't sound to exciting right? Well think again. While I was away at camp my mom sent me a care package and inside was a packet of Snow White Squinkies. And these things are dang cute! I basically died of happiness when I saw them. Take a look:

Bahhhhh. So adorable. Little mini Snow White and seven dwarves? Yeah, you can't go wrong there. I just love Snow White and the seven dwarves. Its not so much that I love the movie or the story as I just love the seven dwarves. Dopey was always my favorite dwarf. :)

They also make these in Ariel and Belle sets which are pretty cute too.

Book Review: Moonglass

Anna's life is upended when her father accepts a job transfer the summer before her junior year. It's bad enough that she has to leave her friends and her life behind, but her dad is moving them to the beach where her parents first met and fell in love - a place awash in memories that Anna would just as soon leave under the surface. 

While life on the beach is pretty great, with ocean views and one adorable lifeguard in particular, there are also family secrets that were buried along the shore years ago. and the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide means that nothing - not the sea glass that collects on the sand and not the truths behind Anna's mother's death stays buried forever.

In a Nutshell: Moonglass is the perfect summer read! Its beachy, and fun, but also has some deeper elements that keep it grounded in reality.

Putdownability Factor: The lazy days of summer feel to Moonglass made it a more of a relax and enjoy book then a tear-through-this-as-fast-as-I-can book.

Cover Love: The cover is gorgeous. Its even sort of pearlescent in real life!!! YAY FOR SHINY BOOK COVERS! :D

My Thoughts

Moonglass isn't your average summer read. On the outside it appears to be your classic fluffy summer novel. But once you crack the cover you realize that there is a whole lot more to this story than meets the eye.

I definitely think that Moonglass falls into the same contemporary category as a Sarah Dessen book. Its got romance, and its summery and fun, but there are also some deeper subjects that play a main role in the story. I thought that Anna was a fun character, and that her progression throughout the novel was really well done. I also liked Tyler a lot! Normally I'm not a big fan of lifeguard beach boy kinds of guys, but Tyler had a sweetness to him that I thought was really endearing.

One of the best things about this novel was the setting. I don't think I've ever read a book that had a more beachy feel to it. Jessi Kirby's writing is so atmospheric! Everytime I opened the pages I would be transported to the beach; I could hear the waves, feel the sand, smell the ocean. Moonglass is the epitome of summer beach reading.

The one element that really made this book for me was the whole back story about Anna's parents. How they met on the beach, how they fell in love, that whole story was just such a win!

All in all this book was really enjoyable. If you're looking for a summer read that is both fluffy, and deep, then Moonglass is for you! Oh and bonus points for CLIFF JUMPING!!!! :D

I give it 4 out of 5 ice cream cones.

Kawaii Monday: Smiley Peach Coin Purse

So I was perusing coin purses online because I realized I really needed to buy one. Why? One too many instances of cashiers asking me if I had exact change or if I had a dime and me digging through the obnoxiously small change pocket in my wallet to find it was just not cutting it. :P Anyway I ran across this little cutie:

*dies of cuteness* I WANT IT SO BAD!!! Unfortunately they were all sold out on the Etsy shop that supposedly had them. That's what I get for looking through Google images to find a coin purse instead of eBay. :P

Cover Comparisons [3]

For this weeks cover comparison we're comparing the multiple covers of Forgotten by Cat Patrick! I don't think I've ever known a book to have so many different covers. Its pretty insane. Almost as insane as the time it took me to track down which cover belonged to which country. :P Haha. But anyway without further ado, here are the covers!

French Cover: I love it! Very elegant and eyecatching. I especially like how the color palette is very simple. However, I don't think it necessarily has the right feel for this book. This cover makes Forgotten feel like a contemporary, when really I think it has more paranormal/fantasy elements to it. But still, a gorgeous cover.

UK Cover: Ehhh I'm not too fond of this one. It makes Forgotten look way too much like an angsty paranormal romance with the gothic color tones and broody clouds in the background. Not a favorite.

Australian Cover: This one is absolutely gorgeous in every way. I LOVE the colors (the most gorgeous shade of poppy red? I think so!) and the way that the photo is processed makes it feel like some sort of dream world/hazy memory which is perfect for this book. I also love the font they chose for the title. I just can't love this cover enough! I want to buy the Australian copy of Forgotten just to get this cover!

US Cover: I'm not really feeling this cover. There's just something about it that seems off to me. Sure the bold font is eye catching, but why does that feel so edgy whereas the girl in the background looks almost like she's from a bygone era? I don't know. If they had used a different background photo I think I would have liked this one better, because honestly the full font front (say that five times fast!) is a pretty cool idea.

So who wins? For me its the Australian cover hands down. Its absolutely gorgeous (POPPY RED!) and I think it captures this book perfectly. That being said I haven't actually read Forgotten yet (I know, bad me....) so I'm only going by what I know from the summary and some reviews.

Book Review: Like Mandarin

It's hard to find beauty in the badlands of Washokey, Wyoming. Fourteen-year-old Grace Carpenter sure knows there's nothing beautiful about her mother's pageant obsessions, or about the cowboy dances or pickup trucks adored by her small-town classmates. True beauty is wild girl Mandarin Ramey; seventeen, shameless, and utterly carefree. Studious and self-conscious Grace would give anything to be like Mandarin.

When these girls, so utterly different from one another, are united for a school project, they embark on an unlikely, explosive friendship-dipping in the canal, liberating the town's animal-head trophies, and searching for someplace magic. When Mandarin suggest that they make a pact to run away, Grace goes along witht he idea on a whim. Maybe it's the wildwinds that plague their badlands town that make her say yes.


After a while, however, Grace has second thoughts. It turns out that Mandarin's unique beauty hides a girl who's troubled - even dangerous. And no matter how hard Grace fights to keep their friendship alive, even the strongest relationships can't withstand betrayal.

In a Nutshell: Like Mandarin is an interesting contemporary that examines one girls journey of finding herself and discovering that life isn't about where you live, but how you live.

Putdownability Factor: Nothing about this book really had me glued to the pages, but I wasn't bored while reading it either.

Cover Love: I think the cover is pretty bland. I wish it was more able to convey what this book is about, and not just your run-of-the-mill contemporary cover. There isn't anything that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Why did I pick this up? For the Contemps Challenge!

My Thoughts

Grace Carpenter has lived her whole life in dumpy Washokey, Wyoming. Its one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone else, and the only exciting thing that ever happens is the town drunk holding up the local fast food restaurant. Yep, its that boring. So I really can't blame Grace (or Mandarin for that matter) for wanting to get out of town. I definitely thought that Grace was a relatable character. Just about everyone has wanted to be like "that girl" at sometime in their life like the way that Grace wishes she were like Mandarin.

I was also able to understand Mandarin even though she was my polar opposite in a lot of ways. Mandarin wanted to live. REALLY live. I admired that in her. She didn't want to just spend her days in a town where she was known only for her reputation and not who she really was. I loved Mandarin's passion for life. Some of the things Mandarin would do reminded me that life is too short to waste. Be a little daring. Take a chance. What's life without a little danger?

Like Mandarin is a book about searching. Searching for love when all seems lost. Searching for hope in seemingly hopeless situations. And searching for the truth. While I didn't love this book, I did love the questions that it posed and I also loved its honesty. There were dark moments that had me cringing, but it never felt overdone, it just felt like life. Hard, even a little scary at times, but still beautiful. I give Like Mandarin 3 and a half ice cream cones out of 5.

Who would I recommend this book to: Teen girls who enjoy contemporary novels with emotional depth and complexity would definitely enjoy Like Mandarin!

Kawaii Monday: Totoro Nail Art

This weeks Kawaii Monday features Totoro nail art! One of my little strange obsessions is nail polish. I just love all the colors. However I never really paint my fingernails. I normally only do my toenails. But then I ran across these cute Totoro themed manicures.

 I'm not a big fan of the pink, but the intricacy is super impressive. How do you even do that with nail polish?! My mind is boggled.

 I think this one is adorable. The colors are perfect! I particularly like the little dustballs. SO CUTE.

This last one is definitely my favorite! They even did the Catbus!!! I really want to try doing it but I'll bet it wouldn't turn out half as good. If I try and manage not to fail I'll be sure to post pictures for you guys.

Cover Comparisons [2]

So you guys may or may not have known about the Across the Universe paperback cover reveal that happened this past week. Well in case you missed this bit of bookish news fear not! Lets compare both covers shall we?

Hardback Cover: You guys may or may not know, but this is basically one of my favorite covers of all time. Yes, even with the nearly kissing faces. ITS JUST SO GORGEOUS. And its not even shiny. Haha. And it doesn't even matter that this cover doesn't necessarily convey what Across the Universe is about because its so freaking gorgeous!

Paperback Cover: Meh. I see this cover and you know what it reminds me of? The cover of Runaway by Meg Cabot. Random but true. Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of the color scheme they used (its just so bland) but I do think this cover does a good job of conveying what Across the Universe is about than the hardback cover.

So who wins? You guys probably already guessed that for me, the original hardback cover is the clear winner. I just love it so much. <3

Book Review: Karma

October 31st, 1984, and fifteen-year-old Maya - half Hindu, half Sikh - is traveling from Canada to New Delhi, India with her father. In her arms she carries only two things:

In a Nutshell: Karma is an in-verse historical fiction novel that is as beautiful as it is powerful.

Putdownability Factor: I tore through this book. And not just because it was an in-verse novel either! Its just plain addicting.

Cover Love: I normally don't like pink, but I think this cover is gorgeous. It perfectly captures the essence of the book.

Why did I pick this up? I was emailed by the author Cathy Ostlere and she was kind enough to send me a copy of the book to review! Also, I'm always a sucker for in-verse novels.

My Thoughts

Ummmm wow this book is PHENOMENAL. Hands down the best in-verse novel I have ever read, and I've read quite a few in-verse novels! This was my basic thought progression while reading Karma:

Beginning: Oh my gosh, this book is so beautiful. WHY IS IT SO BEAUTIFUL?!?!?

Middle: No one better interrupt me because there is no way you are tearing me away from this book!!!

End: WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE OVER?!?!

Basically the message is that this book kicks some major ass and if you haven't read it yet YOU NEED TO. Why? Allow me to explain.

The characters are absolutely amazing. I think a large part of it is because the book is told in the form of diary entries. Each poem is like a window into Maya, or Sandeep's soul. I apologize for the cliche, but its true. >.< Not only that but Cathy Ostlere brilliantly creates two different voices. Its hard enough to write a dual narrative novel, but one that's completely in verse? Genius.

By far the greatest thing about Karma, is the story itself. Its epic, and sweeps you away into this whirlwind of India, turmoil, and romance. Both Maya and Sandeep have their own journey and the way everything plays out is just beautiful.

If you haven't read yet Karma I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to pick it up. It is definitely one of my favorites, if not THE favorite book I've read all year. I give it 5 out of 5 ice cream cones.

Who would I recommend this book to: Just about anyone! Karma has so many elements to it that I can't imagine someone not finding something to like about it. People who enjoy in-verse novels would particularly like this, as would those who enjoy historical fiction.
