Bookish Questions: To buy or to borrow?

I'm a HUGE fan of the Library. Ever since I was little it has been my favorite place to be. I've really been blessed to have great local Libraries and Librarians. And because of this I've just always used the Library. I will gladly admit it: I am a Library addict. If there's a new book coming out, I put it on hold at the Library, if a book is already out, I'll put it on hold, and just about everything I read has a Library sticker on it. I'm one of those people who doesn't buy a book unless I've read it first and LOVED it. Either that or I just got it for a really, REALLY good deal. And even the books that I do buy and love, I have to get them on discount. I can't remember the last time I bought a book for full price and I just can't imagine doing it. I know, I'm such a cheapskate. :P

After starting my blog I've realized how truly unusual I am. I've noticed that a lot of other bloggers just buy all their books. They buy the new releases as soon as they come out, they buy an older book that catches their eye, they buy stuff people recommend, they buy tons, and tons of books and sometimes those same books will sit on a shelf and not get read for another 6 months. I know how that is. I've done it before too. :P

So which kind of reader are you? Do you like to borrow books? Buy the books? Or are you a little bit of both? And do you buy books at full price or do you buy them on discount?

Julia :)

  1. I used to buy books after I read and loved them! These days, I take chances and buy books before knowing that they're good. I've been lucky so far and haven't bought one that I haven't liked! ;)

The books I buy are cheap. Don't you just love The Book Depository? Rarely buy books from bookstores because they're so expensive! Why buy one book from the store when you can get two or three online? :)

  2. I do a little bit of both. Of course at university, I took advantage of the university library that was within walking distance. They had a great selection of YA books there. It was heaven. I've just recently started going to my local library now that I've graduated. The selection of books is a little outdated, but still I haven't read them.

I love buying books and for my birthday and Christmas I usually get about $60 in gift cards to Barnes and Noble from family. I rarely buy new releases because they're so expensive. I usually wait a year or two before I buy them, I wait until they're under $10. Bonus points if they're under $7.

  3. I agree! I've noticed that so many bloggers buy books they want to read. At my local library I put a hold on a new release as soon as it's pre-ordered and usually get it a few weeks after it comes out. I love going to the library and hunting for YA classics or older forgotten novels that are still awesome to read.

  4. That sounds so much like me!
I love libraries! Most of the books I read are from libraries, unless I KNOW I'll like it. I buy almost all my books on sale. Even if it isn't on sale, I still use a coupon.

  5. Well, this is sad to say. But I will just go on ahead and say it. My country doesn't have a library. -.- Yes. I'm serious and on top of that. Our bookstores don't really sell enough YA books. >.< So yea. I buy all my books on full price. I have no other choice. T-T I want great deal and discounts on books.

  6. I don't have libraries. Well, here in Puerto Rico we do but I don't think they have YA books. I'm pretty sure they don't. We have one Borders for the whole island, and that it. Walmart doesn't sell YA books. So, I buy from Amazon. I'm now mostly buying them used to save money.

  7. Sixty percent of the books I review come from the library. Some months it's as high as eighty percent. My book blogging inspired me to go back to school and now I'm half way to an MLIS.

  8. I like owning books that are my favorites, but it sure makes a lot more sense to borrow them from the library. Saves a lot of money, space and trees. Also you can borrow movies from the libary too! Just a side note. :)

  9. I really don't know why, but I just like buying my books! It's like there's some comfort that you have the book with you and you get to see it all the time. Although, I'm really trying to borrow some of my books from the library now to save money.

  10. Very good point! I love the library as well, but for me, there's just satisfaction from buying a book and being the first one to open the pages :)

  11. As we said on FB, we're split. Most of us prefer to buy -- b/c we like to support bookstores, authors, etc. -- but also b/c then the book is ours for unlimited time. We can bend it, underline, share it, etc.

That said, we love libraries and what they do. And we can't always afford our book habit, lol. So it's wonderful that people are taking advantage of their local libraries! We support that for sure.

  12. I often borrow books/movies from the library.

I haven't bought a book at full price in ages. I ALWAYS buy my books at library sales and thrift stores. I win a lot of giveaways too.
