Cover Comparisons [13]

Its cover comparison time! This week I'm comparing the two covers for Jennifer Donnelly's historical fiction novel Revolution. I haven't actually read Revolution (have you seen the size of that thing? ITS A TOME!) but I've heard many great things about it and I really should get around to reading it.... Anyway let the comparison begin!

                                         Original Cover           Paperback Cover

Original Cover: The first time I saw this cover I didn't even realize Revolution was a YA book. It just looks so.... adulty I guess you could say? Anyway I'm not a big fan of this cover. It doesn't intrigue me in the slightest, in fact it makes the book look a bit dull. Not a good thing, especially when the book is already like 500 pages long. :/

Paperback Cover: This cover on the other hand I absolutely ADORE. I've always been a big fan of old keys so that image alone is enough to sell me on this book. It makes me want to open the book and discover what the key is for!

So who wins? Paperback cover all the way! I can't say no to that antique key. Its absolutely GORGEOUS. Plus you can still tell that the book is a historical fiction without it looking half as boring as the original cover!

So which cover of Revolution do YOU like best? Be sure to vote in the poll below and sound off in the comments about why you made your decision!

  1. I like the paperback cover. I've never seen a book get such a drastic cover change from Hardback to Paperback. The title also stands out more on the paperback

  3. I actually liked the original cover better because of the contrast between the two main characters in the book. But I guess you do make a good point of how it looks a bit more adultish :D I probably wouldn't have read it if I hadn't read a previous book from the author.

OH! And it is a pretty awesome book! I absolutely loved it :D

  4. I'm with you on the paperback cover. The hardback would look interesting in a way, in person because it's not a common YA cover. As to why it may look adult, maybe it's because of the other girls' face- the painting one. If there was another photo of a girl there and not a painting, probably it would look more YA. But you got to give it to the design team for thinking out of the box. Man, I'm talking too much! Okay, paperback.

I love the key, too. It reminds me of Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen. But that's not why I like it. It's because the key looks awesome!

  5. Actually these covers are two hardcovers: the first one is the American edition and the second one is the UK edition. The paperbacks are completely different (check them out - I think you'll love the American one in particular).

I like both of these, but the American version is more subtle. The red ribbon around both girls' necks is VERY symbolic on several levels: it's the mark of the guillotine; it's what mourners wore to victims' balls after the French Revolution; and it ties these two girls together (as does the book itself - turns out, they are really the same character in a story that repeats itself over and over through history).

  6. I feel like I'm posting all over the place on your blog today but I think this is one of my favorite books of the last year. I've given it as a gift to at least 2 people. I love the key cover far more than I like the other but, the original US cover I feel goes along with the story so well. So, while I feel like I'd be more inclined to pick up the one with the amazing old key, after reading the book I liked the two girls cover so much more! I can't choose. I love them both.
